【 Knowledge Sharing】How to Inspect Tiles Upon Delivery

As a core building material for decoration, timely and standardized inspection of tiles upon delivery can prevent issues such as color differences and breakages during subsequent tiling, thereby reducing rework costs. The following is a complete inspection process covering "Preparation - Verification - Inspection - Handling", applicable to scenarios like home decoration and engineering procurement.

I.Before Inspection: Complete 3 Preparations to Avoid Omissions

  • 1.Verify order information and clarify acceptance criteria

Retrieve the delivery order prepared by A-diffusion in advance, and confirm the tile model, specification, batch number, quantity, and material.

  • 2.Check the delivery environment to ensure safe operation

When the tiles arrive, first confirm whether the unloading location is flat and dry (to prevent the packaging from getting damp and thus contaminating the tiles), and there are no sharp debris around (to avoid scratching the tiles during handling). If handling is required in a multi-story building, confirm whether the elevator/stairwell size can accommodate the tile packaging (especially for large-sized tiles, to prevent collision and breakage during handling).

  • 3.Prepare inspection tools to improve efficiency

Prepare basic tools: a tape measure (for verifying dimensions), gloves (to prevent hand sweat from contaminating the tiles), a flashlight (for checking surface defects), a straightedge (for measuring flatness, optional), and a dry cloth (for wiping dust off the tile surface). If the purchase quantity is large, prepare paper and pen to record the location and quantity of defective tiles for subsequent verification.

II.During Inspection: 4 Core Inspection Steps to Cover Key Issues

1.Step 1: Verify quantity and packaging - First check "whether there is a shortage or damage"

Quantity counting: Verify the total number of boxes according to the packaging specifications, then randomly select 3-5 boxes to open and check the number of tiles per box. For accessories such as waistline tiles and decorative tiles, count them separately to ensure the quantity matches the order. -

Packaging inspection: Check whether the tile packaging is intact and free from obvious extrusion deformation or damage. If the packaging is damaged, focus on checking whether the internal tiles have corner collisions or glaze scratches.

2.Step 2: Inspect appearance quality - Focus on preventing "color differences and defects"

Color difference inspection: Take one tile of the same specification from different packaging boxes, lay them flat for comparison under natural light (avoid direct light to prevent visual errors), and observe whether the surface color and texture of the tiles are consistent. For patterned tiles, check whether the pattern splicing is coherent without obvious misalignment or uneven color depth.

Surface defect inspection: Use a flashlight to irradiate the tile surface at an angle of 45° (defects are more likely to be visible at this angle) and check for the following problems: ① Glaze issues: Pinholes (small holes with a diameter > 0.5mm), spots (foreign-color impurities), scratches (obvious marks with a length > 2mm), and glaze peeling (local areas where the glaze is missing and the blank is exposed). ② Corner issues: Chipped corners (gaps caused by corner collisions), edge chipping (cracks in the glaze at the edges), and deformation (irregular corners with uneven gaps when laid flat). Note: Minor "pinholes (diameter < 0.3mm) and small scratches (length < 1mm)" that do not affect the overall appearance can be negotiated with the merchant for a price reduction or treated as wear and tear. Tiles with severe defects should be directly marked as "defective tiles".

3.Step 3: Inspect dimensions and flatness - Avoid "uneven gaps and warping" during tiling

Dimensional deviation inspection: Use a tape measure to measure the length, width, and thickness of the tiles (e.g., for tiles marked 800×800mm, the actual dimensional error should be ≤ ±0.5mm, and the thickness error should be ≤ ±0.3mm). Randomly select 5-10 tiles for measurement. If the error exceeds the range, it will lead to uneven gap widths during tiling, affecting the appearance.

Flatness inspection: Fit two tiles of the same specification face to face (glaze surfaces facing each other) and observe whether the gap is uniform. Alternatively, place a 2-meter-long straightedge on the tile surface and measure the maximum gap between the straightedge and the tile (which should be ≤ 0.2mm). If the gap is too large, the tiles are prone to warping and hollowing after tiling.

4.Step 4: Randomly inspect material and performance - Ensure "durability and scenario adaptability"

Water absorption test (for glazed tiles, antique tiles, etc.): Take one tile, drop 1-2 drops of clean water on the back, and observe the water absorption speed. Tiles used in bathrooms and kitchens require a water absorption rate of ≤ 0.5% (full-body tiles, vitrified tiles) or ≤ 3% (glazed tiles). If the water is completely absorbed within 1 minute (indicating fast water absorption), it means the tile has low density and is prone to staining and mold growth.

Hardness test (to avoid "brittle tiles"): Gently scratch the non-glazed surface of the tile with a key or the back of a utility knife (to avoid damaging the glaze). If obvious scratches appear, it indicates that the tile has insufficient hardness and is prone to wear during subsequent use. High-quality tiles will have no scratches or only slight marks that can be wiped off.

Anti-slip inspection (for bathroom and balcony tiles): If anti-slip tiles are purchased, sprinkle a small amount of water on the tile surface and step on it to test the friction. If it is obviously slippery, confirm whether it is the "anti-slip tile" model to avoid potential safety hazards during subsequent use.

I. After Inspection: Handle 2 Situations and Clarify Responsibilities

1. No problems or minor problems: Confirm receipt and store properly

If there are only a few minor defects that do not affect use, you can communicate with the sales manager and then confirm receipt. Qualified tiles should be stored in a standardized manner: - Stack them by specification and batch (height ≤ 1.5 meters to prevent the bottom tiles from being crushed and damaged). - Keep them away from water sources and fire sources (to prevent moisture absorption and thermal deformation). - Cover the surface with a dust-proof cloth to avoid dust accumulation (especially for white tiles, as dust can easily seep into the gaps).

2. Severe problems (high breakage rate, inconsistent dimensions, quality issues)

If quality problems are found, take photos and videos immediately after receipt (recording the packaging box number, details of defective tiles, and total quantity), and contact your dedicated sales manager for further solutions.
